Professional vocal training - Yes or No?

What do you guys reckon about professional vocal training?

I know people like Victoria Hart and Lyla Foy went/go to Vocal Tech school and I really like them. But to my knowledge, people like Chris Martin never have had vocal training and are obviously far more successful. Do you think vocal training is worth the money/effort? If you look at people like the original singer from Killswitch Engage, yeah he only ever really screamed into a mic, but he never learned how to scream 'properly' and he ruined his voice and got replaced and they're now succesful - well in their scene anyway. I know Sebastian Sternberg went as well who now works with Lily Allen amongst other people!

Basically I'm considering going for a one year diploma from Vocal Tech myself and wanted to hear from a bunch of music buffs as to whether it is worth my do$h or if I should earn dosh on a gap year instead? Lol. Anyone here been/going to vocal tech or just getting lessons somewhere? I'm already an accomplished guitarist and can sing alright but if I have serious aspirations to sing in the future should I go for this?

What do you think of the courses - any recommendations/thoughts? www.vocal-tech.co.uk

Cheers

New Manics/Richey book

MANIC STREETS OF PERTH has just been published in Australia and an article is due to go in Wales' national daily, The Western Mail, on or before the 11th anniversary of Richey's disappearance.

It charts the combative relationship between a Welsh reporter, who once interviewed The Manics, and Kim Jones, an unlucky fan who has grown increasingly interested in Richey after her own boyfriend walked out of her life without a word.

The book can be viewed in detail at the Australian Online Bookshop www.bookworm.com.au (although just Googling it should bring up any number of sites). Manics fans should recognise the cover!

Here's an excerpt between the cynical ex-pat reporter Paul Lewis and the Richey-obsessed Kim Jones as they sit in an Aussie pub:

He smiled. ‘So, tell me about this armed robbery.’
‘No, you tell me about Wales.’
‘Why?’
‘I like a band from there.’
‘Oh, cripes, Wales doesn’t have a great musical track record.
We’re guilty of unleashing Shakin’ Stevens on the world. Who do
you like?’
‘Manic Street Preachers.’
He nodded, wondering whether to let on that he’d interviewed
them in 1995 not long before they released their breakthrough
album Everything Must Go. The Manics were Wales’ biggest group,
a far cry from their loud-mouthed genesis as punk revivalists
who stupidly insisted that all bands should release one album
and split up. They were capable of superb music — even if their
pompousness, leftist leanings and self-importance occasionally
grated — and it was a bit of a shame the signs suggested they’d
abandoned their jagged visceral output to embrace soft rock. Still,
at least that meant no more glam clothing and heavy eyeliner.
‘Well, OK, I s’pose they’re one good thing to come out of Wales.’
He grinned. ‘Apart from me, of course.’
‘I’ve got all their CDs.’
‘Yeah, they’ve done some good stuff. Motorcyle Emptiness,
Roses In The Hospital, Die In The Summertime and all that. I used
to watch ’em on Top of the Pops. They ever play here?’
‘Yeah. At the Big Day Out in 99.’
‘You saw them?’
‘Erm, no. Well… I was planning to. But something… got in the
way. I had to cancel.’
‘That’s a shame.’
‘Yeah.’ She chewed her bottom lip. ‘I know. So, which part of
Wales you from?’
‘South Wales.’
‘The bit they’re from? Blackwood?’
‘No, a place called Ebbw Vale.’
‘Ebb-er Vale? Those Welsh names are so weird.’
‘Yes, I believe its exact English translation is ‘Chill Drizzle.’
It’s about twenty clicks from Blackwood, but I used to cover it
as a reporter.’
‘No!’
‘Yep.’ He took a leisurely drink, having decided against telling
her he’d met the band. There was a strange gleam in her eyes,
suggesting her attraction to the Manics went beyond mere liking.
Best not to show all his cards until he figured out what was going on.
He’d slip it into a future conversation, maybe revealing his signed
CD when the revelation could be used to maximum advantage.
‘What’s Blackwood like?’
‘Not pretty. I had a night out there once at a snooker club.
Went along with a couple of mates. Sometime after midnight the
place dissolved into chaos. All these people sitting on barstools
started getting one-inch stab wounds to their buttocks.’
‘What ?’
‘Yep. Turned out a disgruntled patron took it upon himself to
wander around and use a craft knife to randomly jab people.’
‘That’s terrible.’
‘I know, but that’s what my neck of the woods is like. Haven’t
you seen the tourism slogan? ‘Have a great night out in South Wales
and get stabbed in the arse!’’
She laughed. ‘Is that what it’s really like?’
‘Well, let’s just say it isn’t too far removed from Dawn of the
Dead. Brain- dead people stumbling around taking chunks out of
each other.’
She smiled, and then looked strangely intense. ‘What do you
think happened to Richey?’
‘Dunno. Maybe the Manics were planning a duet with Shakin’
Stevens and he just couldn’t handle it.’
‘Do you think he’s still alive?’
‘Perhaps. I guess it’s not that difficult to disappear if you plan it
properly and have got some cash.’
‘I think he’s still alive.’
‘Why the interest?’
‘I just like him. He wrote this one song called 4st 7lb about
anorexia.’
‘Yeah, I know it. It’s on The Holy Bible, an album so relentlessly
horrible it can make children burst into tears at a distance of fifty
paces.’ He took a swig of Kilkenny. ‘It’s one of my favourites.’
She smiled. ‘Well, 4st 7lb seems to sum up Richey.’
‘Yeah?’
‘Yeah. It tells how he wants to walk in the snow and not leave
a footprint because that would soil its purity. That’s how he felt. The
world he lived in was impure, was soiled, and he rejected it.’
‘I told you Blackwood’s pretty horrible.’
‘I’m trying to explain something, Lewis.’ Her voice lowered.
‘Sometimes I think I’d like to walk in the snow and not leave a
footprint.’
‘Well, OK, but you know that’s not gonna happen. For a start,
it never snows in Perth.’ She picked up her glass and looked away.
He frowned. ‘This Richey Edwards stuff is important to you?’
‘Don’t you have a hero?’
‘Yeah. His name was George and he ran the corner shop in
Ebbw Vale. Did the best steak and cheese pies ever.’ She didn’t
indicate in any way at all that she found his anecdote interesting.
Mildly baffled, he tried again. ‘Richey disappeared in 95?’
‘A-huh. He was last seen at the Embassy Hotel in London on
the first of February.’
‘OK, but his disappearance came after years of weird behaviour,
didn’t it? Self-mutilation in public and private, drinking, brushes
with anorexia, stays in psychiatric hospitals, the works. I remember
they found his car near the Severn Bridge. That’s a known suicide
spot. His bank accounts haven’t been touched in nearly eight years.
It’s not looking good, is it?’
‘He’s still out there,’ she insisted. ‘He’s out there right now.
He got away from everything and… he’s just… I dunno… living on
some island and doing simple stuff. And he’s happy.’
‘OK. Maybe. It’s a nice thought.’ It was also pie in the sky. The
Holy Bible was a gut-thumping horror show of an album, a nihilistic
piece of work recorded in a red light district and widely seen as
Richey’s last will and testament. It was a real shame he’d gone. For
although he’d clearly been the most delicate band member and his
actual musical talent was rumoured to be on a par with Sid Vicious
the remaining three’s music seemed to have lost a lot of its balls
since his exit.

Current "Guilty Pleasures"

So, aside from Dave's current love of Lily Allen, has anyone else been listneing to something that might deem as a "guilty pleasure"? Shall I kickstart the proceedings, and therefore show how uncool my music taste can be (or if Andreas would tell you, still is XD...)

Today I found myself listening to Korn's "Follow The Leader" album, because I felt like being angsty. But I found myself nodding along to the songs rather than being angry. Was this simply a case of being ironic, or is the style of music Korn play not just desensitized now (after hearing some Nick Cave stuff, this came across as tame) but that it is actually in the realms of metal-pop these days?

Debate - and then humiliate yourselves.

Thursday on Friday

I have the misfortune to be interviewing some crappy band called Thursday who're supporting MCRomance at Wembley tomorrow, for Killer Dienamite Magazine (which, I discovered this week, is currently on hiatus because the editor has to do her GCSEs).

Yes, my life sucks. Hence me not writing any reviews lately.

So, does anyone have any questions they want answered? All I can come up with are these:

1. Are you gay?
2. Yes, you're gay, aren't you?
3. If you had to kill Russell Brand, how would you do it and which body part would you subsequently steal?
4. When did you last cry for your mummy?
5. Yesterday? Pussies.
6. What's the most disgusting thing anyone's ever thrown at you?
7. Ew. Has anyone ever been sick over you?
8. You're playing Wembley Stadium. Wow. Do you seriously expect anyone to turn up?
9. Ever considered screaming in tune?

If I get free VIP tickets (which I usually do), I'll review the gig for y'alls. Quite a steal, I suppose, free MCR tickets. I'll play on the whole BBC thingy (won't point out I only work for Learning English).

Oh yeah, and if anyone's in London tomorrow evening, I suppose I can share.
